Wake Up And Be Watchful

I am writing on a topic that is foreign for most to many Christians. It is the topic of spiritual watchfulness. Perhaps, that term itself is something you have never heard. Spiritual watchfulness consists in watching over our soul in a careful and guarded manner. Make no mistake about it, evil is real and could bombard you with a violent barrage at any moment.

The spiritual life of a believer is a precious treasure, and it far excels all the wealth this world has to offer, but many are selling themselves to the highest bids of the world. Spiritual slothfulness is one of the greatest tragedies, if not the greatest tragedy of our modern day. The enemy has brought the unguarded Christian to the pinnacle of the hill and offered instant gratification, and many of our dear brothers and sisters have chosen to jump with arms wide open.

All we have to do is look around us, with eyes wide open, and we will see the carnage in the street. Professing Christians everywhere who have forsaken their first love. They have prostituted their souls for instant pleasure and popularity. My heart aches for shallowness I observe today in the American church. Christians are so easily offended by the hard preaching of the truth, but they are not offended by their sin against a holy God. They are offended by styles of worship, but their coarse jesting, slander, and gossip do not offend them.

When a shepherd becomes aware of something, he has the responsibility of warning the sheep. Therefore, I blow the trumpet, I sound the alarm, and I say to all Christians ready your weapon, stand your ground and prepare for war. The enemy is at the door. He is already a defeated foe, but he is desperate, this makes him very dangerous. Many have already run away, but you must stand. Stand watching, stand guarding over the treasure of your soul.

Paul told the Corinthians - "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong" -1Cor. 16:13. Are you slumbering beloved? Are you slothful when it comes to the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, bible reading, and scripture meditation? Are you standing at your post ready to fulfill your duty or are you missing in action? Remember, it's never too late to start loving God the way you should.

We have a perfect, promised rest awaiting us, but presently we must fight. Make war with your flesh and stop making excuses. The enemy is tireless in his attacks, he never sleeps, and he never gives up. Each day we must gain ground on the flesh and the devil. Once we have advanced, we must never give up what we have gained.

Jesus has left us an exemplary example of how to fight: "And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed" -Mark. 1:35. "In these days He went out to the mountain to pray, and all night He continued in prayer to God" -Luke 6:12.

Beloved, we must endeavor to do likewise. I hear so many Christians talking about how tired they are, and how they need a vacation. What they need is a cave, a place of solitude, a consistent time alone with God in prayer. Jesus told His disciples -"Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" -Matthew 26:41

Get alone with God until you get a burden that is reflective of His.
